Greetings from Bavaria!

Now that Matt’s workload has abated a bit, we are spending our first day off in a campsite! It is huge and directly adjacent to a lake.

The last two days of riding were quite hard for us, even though they were really fairly short – I guess our legs are still a bit tired from the alps. On Friday, we had some more rain, which necessitated a late start but wasn’t otherwise much of an inconvenience. In fact, it even meant we stopped for an actual hot lunch still on the Austrian side of the border which turned out to be great! We essentially got unlimited soup & salad buffet, as well as a small main course and a desert for 9 bucks each – and it was yummy food, too! (Knoedel and Topfenpalatschinken, if you care to know....)

We crossed the border by going over a roofed wooden bridge and were greeted in Germany by gravel paths where we had enjoyed smooth tarmac before. On the other hand, the route along the Inn continued to be beautiful and car-free. When we passed roads and stations, they were weird reminders that we are in fact in Germany – that still feels very strange for us. The campsite we arrived to was fairly nondescript, but on a nice little lake. Luckily, our still soaking tent dried very quickly once got a chance to lay it out.

Yesterday, our friend il Vento made a reappearance as soon as we left the Inn path to head north. We were wondering why we were struggling so much to get up even small hills when we turned a corner, had the wind in our back and suddenly were doing 25kmh – UP the hill.... But in general, we were quite tired, so the day was way more of a struggle than usual. Fortunately, it also included some stunning views to cheer us up as well as a really fun and safe downhill, which allowed us to break our speed record again – it now stands at 55.5kmh! We had to take a detour in the evening to get to somewhere with a supermarket, because we didn’t see any all day.

We arrived at the campsite exhausted, but quickly found a very nice spot just on the lakeside. Our lovely camp neighbours promptly invited us for dinner and told us there was a midsummer event happening at the lake that night. There was a big bonfire lit by people shooting flaming arrows at it as well as beer and some music.... A really nice end to the day!

For today, we are looking forward to doing nothing much at all, plus maybe a swim in the lake and our very own tiny barbecue 
